Hardscrabble Heritage Tour

Celebrate the 200th birthday of Julia Dent Grant with an exclusive guided journey to Hardscrabble, the historic cabin built by Ulysses S. Grant and home to Julia during the early years of their marriage.

This limited-capacity experience offers a rare opportunity to step back in time through living history, immersive storytelling, and a scenic ride through Grant's Farm.

Exclusive Guided Tour of Hardscrabble

Explore the historic Hardscrabble cabin alongside historians with support from our neighbor, the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, as we share the remarkable story of Julia Dent Grant, Ulysses S. Grant, and life on the Dent family farm.

Experience living history with volunteers portraying 19th-century civilians and military personnel, dressed in authentic period attire. Historical and interpretive exhibits will bring the era to life.

Scenic Deer Park Tram Tour

Following your visit to Hardscrabble, enjoy a narrated tram journey through Deer Park featuring historical interpretation with support from the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site. The tour includes a special stop at the former site of Wish-ton-wish before continuing to the Grant's Farm Tiergarten.

Continue Your Visit

Upon arrival at Tiergarten, guests may:

• Continue exploring Grant's Farm at their leisure and return to Grant's Station via the regular tram service, or

• Remain aboard the tour tram for return transportation to exit the farm.

Please park in the Grant's Farm Main Parking Lot.

Check in at Grant’s Station at least 15 minutes before your scheduled departure time.

The tram departs promptly at the scheduled tour time.

Additional Event - Open House at the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site(opens in a new tab)

Guests are also invited to attend an Open House, Julia Dent Grant 200th Birthday Celebration at the Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site, featuring a 200th Birthday exhibit and historic tours of Whitehaven. This event will be from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM. This is a free event, and no ticket is required.

This event will be adjacent to Grant’s Farm guest parking lot. Guests can park at the historic site or take a short walk from the Grant’s Farm guest lot via the Great Rivers Greenway paved trail.
